When I'm making the faces to connect the Dpad face after drawing the arrows, I'm getting some weird connections that make it really hard to do this neatly. Any thoughts why my faces aren't as clean?

That has most likely to do with what exactly you have Selected, when filling with F.
Delete those Faces and try again.
