Also, please add some screenshots, so we can see what's going on.
Without any information, I'd guess it might have to do with your Select Mode (Vertex, Edge, Face).

Very weird indeed. When you say the whole icosphere increases, you mean it scales up? The whole object gets bigger? Are you in edit mode and have some faces selected?
