What color management gives the most realistic look?

Hi all, I'm interested in using "RAW" because this is the more realistic approximation of how an actual camera in real life would capture a photo with a wide dynamic range too. My priorities are to make something realistic first, then worry about making it look pretty second using different techniques.

Is RAW the most realistic color management? If not, what is?

Raw just holds lots more color depth information if I'm not mistaken, so I'd say.... yes.

It depends on what you are going to do with the image, but if you're staying in Blender (recommended), you should use Raw, some compositng, Convert to AgX, and some final compositing.

It all depends on your use case, and you need to define what you mean by realistic.

If you are looking for Realistic from point of view of Images/videos that are used in blender with minimum color shifting then Standard is your go to. Standard is best suited for video editing in Blender. Side Note: When rendering videos thru the VSE there is a separate color space setting for it in the color management.

If you're looking for Realistic from the point of view of the image data then RAW is your go to. RAW is better if you are producing for Print since it provides higher range of colors than can be displayed on a standard sRGB monitor. otherwise it's used more for finding problems than actual rendering end results.

If you're looking for Realistic from point of view of a camera then Filmic and AgX are your go to. Filmic produces a better representation of lower quality digital cameras or more like old style film cameras. AgX better represents higher quality digital camera an advanced film/photo chemical processing.

If you're looking for Realistic from point of view of RAW data format(Not to be confused with RAW color management). Like what you would use in a program like dark room. Then I believe Khronos PBR Neutral is the best option. This was added in 4.2 and I haven't played with it much.

Now based on how your question is stated, I believe Filmic Log is probably what you are looking for. Filmic Log is best suited when you are rendering specifically for the purpose of doing color grading in another program like DaVinci Resolve.

I'd love to learn more from this person about how to achieve realistic lighting, but what's this extra lighting video where they talk about realistic lighting values? There is no "lighting" option when I look through videos. That's Jonothan right? I'm going through the new Craftsman video too, so if I can not only get through that, but also make it look realistic, that's a huge new leap form me in 3D modeling.

Hi Sid, that would be in the previous Fundamentals of Lighting Course, in this Lesson:
