I couldn't seem to get the envelopes to enlarge. What am I doing wrong.?

I'm not entirely sure what's going on in your situation but here's some things to check.
Do you have the armature in Envelope display mode? (edit mode for the armature too)
- Select the head, tail or body of the bone
Press Alt S to adjust the size of the envelope
Shift Ctrl Alt S will scale the envelope falloff - but this only works if you have the body of the bone selected
There are also the Tools in the tool bar.
Let me know if you're still having trouble.
(But honestly - you will never need envelopes)
