For the most part, I've not had any issues following the tutorial with a 4.4.1/3 version of Blender. But apparently the weight painting brushes changed with 4.3 and there's no longer the subtract brush that would remove from the active set like Wayne does here. For this step, I hopped into a 4.2 version and didn't have any problems pulling in the work I'd done to this point with 4.4, but thought I would mention this in case anyone else was following along with a newer version than this was recorded with as it is a bit of a change. Would be curious to know if there's an easy way to remove the verts from the active set in 4.3 and newer
The biggest thing this will affect is that doing it the way Wayne does it, the areas with the dark blue will stay dark blue and never go to black.
(also.. 4.5 and later might have some file-breaking changes that could make trying to go back to the earlier version not very feasible, so I'd watch out for that.)
If you want to use subtract and/or add brush in newer versions of blender all you have to do is select the paint brush. then click brush in the header. Then change blend mode from mix to Subtract or Add. It will work the same as those brushes in older version of blender.
Ah! thanks! that's what I was missing!
The searchind I did just said it had been removed... I didn't see anything that mentioned doing that :D
The problem with doing the CTRL was that it wasn't removing it from the active group. So the bit where you'd remove the darker blue so it would remove it from the active group wouldn't work.. . it would just stay dark blue and not turn black. :D
To make this easier, I figured out how to duplicate the "Paint" brush and set the mix mode for that one to subtract and labeled both so I knew which one was which :D
