You can leave the motion paths on if you like, but one thing that you should do is use the orthographic camera directly from the front view.
The exercise file already has this set up for you.
When you're learning timing and spacing, it's best to limit the influencing factors as much as you can.
Using an orthographic camera means that the spacing isn't distorted by any perspective (things closer to the centre of the view plane will have larger spacing)
Plus you will really be able to see the contacts with the ground when you are only dealing with 2 dimensions.
We'll get to 3 dimensions by the end - but there is method to all my madness.
