Simple question

I'm having a simple problem: I'm using left-click select. After selecting both the mesh and the armature, when I go to weight paint mode, I can't select the bones by clicking because every click is a stroke. I tried other selection tools like box select (which does select them in the viewport) but doesn't actually select them—it's weird. How do left-click users select bones in weight paint mode? O.o
