Hey everyone. I noticed at the beginning of the vid, after sizing the original cube “.” doesn’t zoom in and navigating around the object moves the cube away from the viewport very quickly. Where in preferences can I go to change these two issues: the zooming in with period and navigating around object more easily? Thank you!

Make sure you use the NUMPAD period key.

Numpad period should zoom in without a problem, it's a very basic function. In may just be some getting used to navigating in the 3D view more than anything. Have you watched the Blender Basics? If not, linking you up:
