I'm getting the same problem with crashing EVERY time! I have a brand new MBPro (early 2016) fully upgraded: 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB. This is the most powerful 13" Mac money can buy. Unfortunately, the new MBP's forbid the replacement of the graphics card. If you do you forfeit and lose your Apple Care Plan. So, with a $2700 computer, I'm absolutely unable to finish this workflow because when I get to the multi-res bake portion it crashes inescapably. So, am I to believe that a near $3K piece of hardware can't accomplish this task? This seems utterly absurd to think. I also am not tracking with this workflow well, as it seems just a bit disorganized and cluttered with assumptions. I'm really not trying to be discouraging to Kent; I know he knows his stuff, but instruction seems a bit underpar on this one. If this expensive of a computer can't perform the lesson tasks (and it can't), I'm left wondering, what ELSE will I not be able to do. :(

I'm sorry to hear you're frustrations with the course and flow overall. One thing I've learned from doing this for nearly 4 years is that a perfect, globally-understood piece of education is an impossible task. And it's a weird place to be when apologizing to you for the difficulty you're having with the material while also thanking other users who tell me they've learned so clearly from the same material.

That said, you're kick-ass computer should be able to handle these baking tasks easily. So let's get to trouble shooting:

What version of Blender are you using?

No need to apologize. You've helped me learn SO much Kent. So a big "Thank you" is certainly in order. Yeah it can get a little frustrating sometimes. And this one did seem a little rushed, but that's ok. Anyway, Dennis helped me resolve the problem. The sub-surf was not turning off properly (no idea why) so that, combined with the multi-res, was crashing my Mac. Not sure why 2.76 was not allowing me to turn off sub-surf??? But the version upgrade solved the problem. The bake-a-thon continues. Keep up the great work!
