dissolving the corner edges breaks the model, how do i fix it?

It's hard to tell from that image alone, but maybe you had some 'Double Vertices' and/or inconsistent Normals.
Before dissolving the Edges, Select All (with A) and then M > Merge > By Distance, followed by SHIFT+N, to re-calculate the Normals.
Then try dissolving the Edges again.
