I am working on this revolver and I get these strange shadows as I rotate my object around. Some are visible all the time. I have mirror and subdivision surface modifiers turned on. I started another project and did another revolver and I seem to have the same issue. I checked and normals look good, no doubles. I was reading online and someone said to massage the vertices to get rid of the problem, but some are importat loops and I can't stretch them too much. Would there be anyhting else to check? Thanks.
It can be a couple of things. You may have geometry underneath, so when you're on edit mode, try hiding some faces and see if there is something behind your mesh. Do so in object mode as well, hide some stuff around.
It might also be that that is just how the Subdivision modifier is expected to work. That's no moon, it's a space station. That's no shadow, it's the SubD smoothing your mesh. Try this, when you are in edit mode, just turn off the SubD preview on edit mode button, see if that thing goes away. That would be this little guy here:
I think what you are seeing in edit mode is the curved surfaces caused by the subdivision surface modifier.
You can turn off edit mode visibility for that modifier over in the properties for the Sub-D
Hey guys, thanks for your advice. It seems the SubD is the problem. If I turn it off those shadows disappear. I thought it was an issuse with how I constructed my mesh, I didn't see JLampel to have this effect in his tutorial.
Nah don't worry, is normal SubD behavior. It's not a problem at all. It's like painting your skin for Halloween and people are freaking out like oh my god what happened to you, what's that that you have there, and you're like nah don't worry, it's just how paint looks when applied to my skin.
