Found a workaround for the custom leaf bug:
Toggle "Show Leaves" OFF before selecting the leaf object
@theluthier It seems to be necessary to select the "Custom Leaf Shape" first and then select "DupliFaces" as you do it in the lesson about the creation of the "Hero Tree" before video mark 5:46.
