Outwitters Tribute: Adorables - Mobi Final

5 loves

INTRO

I would like to introduce you to one of my personal favorites, the Mobi character. The Adorables team leader unit from the beloved game, Outwitters on iOS (now discontinued).

ADORABLES MOBI UNIT STRATEGY

This is the most expensive unit on the team, coming in at 7 wits for cost. Ironically, the Mobi cannot do any attack damage. It comes with 2 health, and it can move 3 spaces on its own. That doesn't sound like much by itself, but this unit comes with a super-powered inhaling move that lets it suck in a friendly unit from any location on the game board and spit it out in any free adjacent space to this unit. You only get one of these special moves per turn.

Let's talk some strategy options:
Need to pull a heavy back for a heal?
What about bringing in a newly made Sniper across the board for quick ranged damage?
Or, maybe you want a scout to make a sneak attack and get pulled back so another can jump into the same tight space for a double attack?

Yeah, this unit can change the outcome of a game going from bad to winning with the right moves. Did I mention he is whimsically adorable!?!

PRINTING WORKFLOW

I'll keep this one short since I have another project to post within the week hopefully. I showed off this character at the Austin BCON print workshop. And, it will be the demo character for the tutorial used in my new Print Prep extension that I just submitted to the Blender Extensions platform. Every user can import the character and learn the Print Prep extension following along my tutorial. More on that later.

I only had one print failure. The right wing tipped over during print due to support cylinders breaking off mid print. The second attempt went off without a hitch. I took the final assembled photos only on this project, but happy to share that this character was completely prepped with my extension and it was amazingly fun to do.

The Mobi was printed in the same filament color scheme as its other units with glow PLA highlights. I snagged a couple of pics on the shelf with the others for a fun show and glow. I hope you enjoy the outcome as much as I do.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I have 1 more character to go for the Adorables team and he'll hopefully be ready by the end of the week for his own debut.

  • These figurines look amazing Shawn, I am jealous and I don't even know the game, it doesn't appear either if I look for it on the App Store, not sure if there is any way to try it anymore.

I remember you mentioned something about the software you used to model these on Discord? I might be wrong, but I remember something about a VR app? I have a meta quest collecting dust and this could be a good chance to give the headset some use.

Could you please share a bit more about your process / the modeling part / the vr app? or learning resources, anything really. Thanks in advance!

      Thanks Carlos21
Yeah it no longer shows up on the app store and only pass and play is supported if you still have the app.

Regarding the modeling/sculpting process: I use 4 different apps depending on my mood or wanting to learn via a different medium.

I bought a copy of ShapeLab Max on desktop and VR. I have 2 characters I made on that….the second of which I hope to finish this week.

Then I also use Nomad Sculpt and Uniform on my M4 iPad. I still think it is amazing I can now do 3D on VR and iPad. Nomad is super fun and just an amazing app. Uniform is really good but crazy hard learning curve, but it lets you use SDF shapes (like a live version of boolean with a merge-melding twist option).

And of course I do work on my models in blender. Usually just to tweak the models and geo and for clean-up work.

Then when it comes to print prep it is ALL BLENDER! I made a new extension (add-on) called Print Prep and it makes prepping my models a joyous and artistic experience.

Sharing the process will be more of a challenge but maybe I try recording one of these days. I won’t be as quick as content creators. I can usually push out a character a week or two if I have work. Let me know if you have any other questions!

All clear Shawn, that's what I was looking for, the app names, I also have Nomad Sculpt but still don't know how to use it properly. I'll have a look at the other 2 as well. Thx for sharing!

  • Awesome work. And congrats on the extension. Hope it'll get approved soon.
Last character is the one with the fork, I assume? I feel I can relate to that one. 😁

Thanks. I got some feedback about code clean-up so that will be next step. Nothing major, just need to un-Serpens the code that the Serpens add-on exported.

And yup the last character on the team is the one with the fork. I’m getting closer and hoping to finish him this week.
