After watching Craftsman I was inspired to plan something for our living room wall. Not necessarily a built-in, but this is what I submitted as my final project.
The goal was to furnish the TV wall with something pleasing, versatile and yet minimalist. The Japandi style fits the bill just right, and shelving allows for a refresh as often as we would like, just by changing what is on display.
Shelves are not necessarily hard to model, I know... but for what is worth, I modeled all our existing furniture using the techniques from the course. Shelves, slat wall, side tables, coffee table, bar stools, and couch.
The vases and planters are also 3D printed existing objects in our house. The photos are also ours... The remaining are props from around the web, modified to be as close to what we actually own.
I learned a lot in the process and loved doing this. Better yet, my husband loved the result and we are definitely building this over the winter (we're the weekend DIYer type π€·π»ββοΈ).
I don't think we'll ever do any projects without this style of pre-viz! So helpful!!
The last photo is an actual photo of the room, "naked". When we finish the build I'll make sure to add the photo here for comparison.
Woohoo ... the doors can open now π€£
One more time: Awesome work, Nathi. Looking forward to seeing the real deal.
Lol they do!
I totally see that now on every room render. Thank you for the super detailed feedback Sascha!
What separates good from great is definitely the details and you left no stone unturned.
I tried to address all your notes and I believe it made a world of difference on these. βΊοΈ
Quel bel appartement. Great Job! Nathi
Thank you Claire! :)
Yeah, it's a pretty cozy home. About to get cozier π€
Absolutely awesome how this turned out!
Thank you Martin! It means a lot :)
Sascha made it easy to get great results. What a great course!
Archviz is perfect for previz the house livinz and spend $$$ smartlyz. Awesome as always Nat π€πΌ
Lol. Precisely! No one wants to spend all that time and money to figure out they didn't love it after all.
Thanks Omar!
Another thing I really like is all the things that make this feel lived in. I don't think people realize how much wall art, decorative vases, plants, books, knick-knacks, and other things can really help a room feel lived in and not just staged.
So the fun part Grady is that most of these are actually real and part of our decor at home (just not necessarily on shelves yet).
I agree that we have to make it feel lived in! But more importantly, I really wanted to be able to visualize our space with it, so I got props that were very close to the real pieces we have, or made them. The photos are all mine (I enjoy taking photos on our travels), the planters are all 3D prints we did (extra easy for those, since I had the stls)... and so on.
It definitely helped us feel confident with the plan, and feel like it's home :)
I think the fact you're using things from your own space is perfect :D I see a lot of renders where things are too perfectly placed, too perfectly matched, little signs of use, generic pictures, very little sense of an actual person living in it. That's why I like when I see things like the map on the wall, the knick-knacks, multiple stacks of books, etc. Even if you just make up a title to put the spines of books, it helps to give a sense of who uses the space. That's why a lot of times when I'm doing a scene like this, I'll reuse some of my other works like scupts I've done as knick-knacks, and renders in picture frames, etc :D I feel like ones like this one here are just a touch better than the "staged" ones that feel like they belong in a magazine and don't really reflect the person using it :D
I was about to say looks like you got the TV reflection worked out :D nice result!
Thanks! Yeah, the custom normals thing did the trick. It was important... not enough light in our room for Gobos, so getting the reflections there was paramount.
How great is this. What a brilliant use for 3d. That TV reflection looks great too. Scrolling down I was like whoah this looks so real before I realised it WAS real. There's so much work in this with all the extra props and dressing elements. Well done. Also you're done in time to do at Xmas advent calendar :)
You are too kind! Thank you!
Lol. I promise I'll try to get at least another one in. But it's so tempting to just get started with my Luminor course now. Lol.
Squirrel!
