Culture Final

A project for me between work days. I used photographs of places near me to give me the ground work and general composition. As an on/off project it took 8 days. I do feel like there's a perspective issue with the lighter path leading to the shadowy area under the bridge. If you have any suggestions I'd love to receive them! Thanks!

  • I agree. Some is great art. Some is just vandalism. Never black and white. Always grey. Here in the states the law protects the taggers more than the property owners. You have great talent.

  • Hey Cody! Thanks a ton! That's the reaction I sought :D

  • Heyy! Thanks by the way for all your comments and feedback, it's a real treat to engage with someone whose own portfolio demonstrate true technical skill!

I agree with you; vandalism by way of graffiti is a massive negative. In Bristol here in the UK, graffiti artists have actually come in to brighten the place up -- although some more tasteful than others. There are some real works of art around that help to bring colour to the otherwise brown/grey jungle. But where you see tagging and pure acts of mindlessness then yes, definitely, it's a stain on society.

My thought behind this composition is the world is destroyed (hooray for dystopia!), and the backstory is the floating globes are always on the search for stragglers - very War of the Worlds style. So this guy then works in the city only very loosely hinted in the background (I could have done better with it), hence the suit shirt and trousers (again, maybe I could have depicted that better?).

During the day, he does his drone-like day job. When he gets away, he's trying to bring back some semblance of culture. Sure, perhaps the culture choice is questionable, but who knows what we'd turn to if there is no individuality.

In real world terms, that is a staggering amount of money to rid the US streets of graffiti :| I wonder how much the economy was boosted by the sale of the paint on those grounds - wow!

  • Well done. I have a problem with anything that glorifies/condones tagging/graffiti/vandalism. According to USA Today the 2010 U.S. cost to taxpayers was 15 to 18 Billion dollars. With that out of the way. I like the feel of this render.
