I tried to make something similar myself following @ritons tutorial (see http://henri-hebeisen.com/article14/abstract-landscape), mainly because I was curious how it is done. The difficult part for me was to find an interesting spot on the underlying image containing structures that are suitable for this purpose. Although not a 100% satisfied I ended up with this..
