These are the two characters from my short "A moment in the sun". Gronky (the happy one) is a fully realised 3D character, Pointy (the angry one) is a cheated-to-camera 2D-ish character that can only be seen from certain angles.
This is a render straight out of Cycles. There's a negative light in Gronky's mouth to suck up any stray rays and keep it as close to black as possible. (Yes, negative lights are a thing.)
