This is a comic book like piece of art I did for a friend who published a trilogy of books centered around one character called Bladeborn. Possessing a magical sword that was forged from seemingly a meteor he ascends from a mere homeless urchin stealing to survive to a mighty warrior king... however the sword has a deeper secret, it is sentient and is guiding Bladeborn towards its own goals which are not in the best interests of all.
This is my first ever attempt at making a cel shaded comic style artwork. Previous attempts at making comic style artwork were soft shading and to be honest it was very subpar to what I wish to express. My friend made these books and was always struggling to make a solid image of the character so I went ahead and tried to do this for him. It was greatly appreciated by my friend and inspired him to write further, getting him over the writers block... and allowing him to publish a stand alone sci-fi novel.
I learned how to do this from CGCookie: Concept exercises on Deviant Art. I wish I could say this was easy for me, but I am sure with more practice it could become much better.
