How We’re Using AI at CG Cookie: Our AI Policy

Oct 9th 2025

We've published our (CG Cookie's) AI Policy that explains how the people behind CG Cookie may use AI during our day-to-day work on the CG Cookie project, and what it means for our members.

AI is an uncomfortable topic to discuss openly in the creative world, enough to make a Rancor sweat. 😅

AI is increasingly appearing in more tools and workflows every day. From caption generators, to denoisers, to actual 3D model generation.

Like many businesses, it has become part of our work behind the scenes and is integrated into the third-party services we use.

I felt it was worth talking about, vs not. So hang with us...

This policy is our way of documenting and communicating how AI shows up in our day-to-day work related to CG Cookie and the platform: thoughtfully to support education, to amplify our creativity vs replace it.

What does this mean for members and students?

  • Your data and artwork stay yours: CG Cookie does not sell your information or use your uploads to train AI models. We've added a meta-tag across the site that communicates to ethical AI crawlers not to use images uploaded to our platform for training purposes.
  • We use AI Tools to assist your learning:  Some of the third-party services we rely on to bring CG Cookie to you use AI for things like captioning, translation, summarization, and outlines, to name a few.
  • You should always produce your coursework: Exercises and gallery submissions should reflect your Blender skills and experience, not an AI's. The goal is to help you fundamentally learn and grow as an artist, and that only happens when you understand what's going on under the hood.

Cool, but why are you sharing this?

We're learning that unless you tell the story of why you're doing something, one will be created for you, and it will likely be wrong. 😑

CG Cookie has been honored to be part of the Blender community for nearly two decades, and we typically don't like to talk about ourselves in this way: The, "How we work", "why we work", so this is a step in that direction. (You can read our origin story here).

AI is changing quickly, and it's important to us that our community understands how it's used here and how it's not. This policy gives public-facing guidance for students, instructors, and our Autotroph team.

It's worth noting that technology is changing quickly, so we may have to revise the policy to adapt, but this is where we're at today. 🫡

Thanks for reading, supporting this funny-named project over the years, and we'll continue to work to help foster and elevate those creatives in the Blender community for years to come.
