Well, when texting was a new thing, and it costed 10 cents per text with a 100 character limit, people cut down the words or used shorthands, like lol or pos.
I don't really see the benefit of dropping one or two letters; hitting a key on the keyboard is not much work.
It doesn't really matter that much nowadays.

Need to maximize that cost.
