CORE | Fundamentals of Lighting in Blender

Instructor:
Kaizen

Welcome to one of the most important skills you'll ever learn in 3D; Lighting!

Why? Well, lighting is your gateway to better renders.

Even the best models look bad with bad lighting, but bad models can look half-decent with great lighting. Lighting is both the sauce that makes your meal, but also the spice to hide it's flaws.

In this course, part of the CORE Blender Fundamentals series we'll dive into lighting. Covering all it's aspects ranging from Cycles to EEVEE Next lighting and going over some of the main lighting methods, taken directly from real life.

Are you brand new to Blender?

These courses should help you get up to speed in no time.

What you will learn in this Blender Class

Chapter 1

An intro to lighting

We'll go over some of the basics of light in Blender. What is it? What are the differences between Cycles and EEVEE and which types of light do we have at our disposal. Basic, but very important stuff!

Chapter 2

Lighting with Cycles

If Cycles is your preferred engine, this chapter is for you. Diving into some more fundamentals of light and covering all the unique features of Cycles lighting, this chapter will give you the ins and outs of lighting with Blender's powerful Path Tracing engine.

Chapter 3

Lighting with Eevee

Don't want Cycles? Then EEVEE might be the way for you! With Blender 4.2's new EEVEE Next render engine lighting and graphic fidelity just got better than ever. Can't work in 4.2? No worries, this chapter has got you covered!

Chapter 4

Lighting Showcase

Lighting in 3D takes it's inspiration from the real world. Not because we have to, but because it works so well. That's why this chapter covers some of the more well known lighting techniques used by professionals for decades. I really liked this course. I learned a lot both about stuff in the engine, but also ways of implementing the lights in a more "creative, artsy" way. While I was watching the course I got lots of ideas on what I could achieve using the engine. Also Kaisen's way of explaining everything was really complete. I think one thing I liked most about this course was the very good examples it has, and the really short lections too. Easier to understand for me.

This course was absolutely great! Kaized did an excellent job introducing all the important and key elements of lighting. I’d already watched a few of his videos on YouTube, so I was really happy to see him teaching one of the courses here as well!

Not only were all the fundamentals covered (many of which reminded me of the principles of photography) but the course also tied them directly to the Cycles and Eevee Next render engines. Learning about what each engine can and can’t do (especially Eevee), as well as the possible workarounds, made for fantastic learning material.

The course was excellent overall: engaging, informative, and well-structured! It covers everything a person needs to know to learn lighting in Blender (and honestly, lighting in general).

This course really felt like it pulled back the curtain at least a fair amount on how the pros get their scenes looking as good as they do. Out of all the courses I have done so far in the CORE series, I am going to guess that this one might be one of the most impactful. The stuff in here could make a night-to-day difference in the quality of future work.

The instructor did a great job explaining everything, I didn't feel lost or confused at any point.

I love the suggestion at the end to apply the knowledge learned here to the previous exercises from mesh modelling or the shark sculpt, since at that same point in the video I was also thinking about how to apply the techniques to old projects.

This course was extremely enlightening for me. Kaizen did a masterful job at breaking down the various lighting settings within Blender and describing when to use them. I feel much more confident in my knowledge of lighting, and I highly recommend this course.

Thorough! Interesting. Smooth transitions between topics. Final lighting of the scene was eye-opening. (please pardon my pun...but so appropriate) Course is much more than I hoped for. Thank you.

That was a very good course full of theory that is very helpful when you work individually after. You just need to dive into it, don't expect to have too much of practice yourself but instead listen and watch carefully to get to the point, then make your steps. I'm very glad with this course!
